Spring Weekend in Vasto

Spring Weekend in Vasto - 7 Fun Things to Do

Spring is here! While we wait for summer to arrive, it’s a great idea to have a weekend break. Here are seven of our favorite things to do on a spring weekend:

1. Have a picnic in

Punta Aderci

The natural reserve of Punta Aderci is undoubtedly one of the places I love most in Vasto. Not only for sports activities but also for a panoramic picnic.

Let’s bring some “pizza rossa” from the famous Stanisci bakery on our street, and a bottle of bubbles… fabulous!

This is how we also celebrated my birthday in February.

2. Taste Abruzzo Wines

Abruzzo is a fantastic wine region! Famous not only for the “Montepulciano d’Abruzzo” red variety but offers also excellent whites and exceptional rosés.

For me, Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo is a rare gem of the Italian wine scene, with its dazzling cherry color and fruity flavor.

3. Visit theTrabocchi coast

I love trabocchi! There’s something mysteriously beautiful about these antique fishing machines that decorate our strip of the Adriatic coast.

If you’re a lover of cycling, you can do a tour, independent or guided, on the cycling path that runs on the coastline.

Alternatively, you can do a relaxing walk on the path. I’ll be happy to advise you where to depart from.

4. Explore the Medieval castle of Roccascalegna

I’ll always remember the first time I saw this castle, it was dream-like!

Roccascalegna is an easy drive from Vasto, circa 50km.

We’ve been there numerous times with family, friends and guests, and it always has the same “wow!” effect on everyone, regardless of age.

I warmly recommend a guided tour of the castle, that way you’ll get much more out of the visit.

5. Take a Beach walk in Vasto Marina

I find the sea beautiful all year round, both winter and summer. Having said that, the rough winter sea strikes me most, with its wild force.

The Vasto Marina beach stretches out to San Salvo Marina and offers 8km of fine golden sand.

This beach is particularly suited for long relaxing walks in the springtime, before the beach clubs reopen.

6. EAT Arrosticini

“Arrosticini” are surely the most famous dish of Abruzzo.

These sheep meat skewers are grilled, according to tradition, on a long and thin special grill.

They are perfect with a glass of Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC. Or why not Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo!

(And I won’t tell you how many Umberto is capable of eating in one evening!)

7. Take an early morning panoramic walk

OK, I agree that getting up early is not always fun but I can assure you it’s worth it in Vasto, at least one morning.

To get your panoramic walk started, walk to the end of our street, Via Santa Maria, and you’ll find the best spot to watch the sunrise.

And if you’re not an early morning bird, don’t worry, the view from the panoramic promenade remains magnificent all day.
